Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T500 (T700 with H.264 Recording?)

The release of Sony 10-megapixel DSC-T500 reminds us of the recently announced DSC-T700. The latter sports a sleeker case (16mm thick) versus 22mm of the T500; the the new Cyber-shot looks that much “bulkier” in comparison. If you don’t mind the extra 6mm, the T500 is actually a slight improvement over its close cousin - especially when both will retail for the same price.

The most eye-catching feature is the ability of the T500 to record in H.264/AAC video in 720p at 30fps (although the video bit-rate is still unknown as of this writing). Whether or not this will playback on PS3 remains to be seen, but the Cyber-shot limits the recording length to 10 minutes - likely to comply with YouTube’s one of many format requirements. The T500 additionally allows you to zoom in during movie capture and to shoot high-sensitivity video in low-light environment. The T500 has a 5x optical zoom compared to 4x of the T700. Both models have a 3.5″ 16:9 touch screen; built-in 4GB memory; and support for the latest PRO-HG Duo card.

Then why choose the T700? Apparently, the T700 has an insanely sharper Xtra Fine LCD that produces a total of 921,000 pixels, packing four times the resolution of the T500. So that makes quite a difference during photo previews.
